Writing

I am a two-time participant, 2017 and 2018, in the McMullan’s Young Writers Workshop (MYWW) at Millsaps College in Jackson. There I learned about writing from established authors such as Kiese Laymon, Pam Houston, and Joyce Carol Oates. During my time at both workshops, I wrote the two poems mentioned below.

I am also a two-time published author. I wrote one poem each year for a poetry contest and they were published in the Appelley Publishing 2018 Rising Stars Collection (pictured here) and the 2019 Rising Stars Collection. The titles were "Pink Zinnias" and "Do You?", respectively. "Pink Zinnias" was also published in my school’s literary magazine late within the last school year.

Journalism Conference

I was the Mississippi representative for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference in June 2018. Each year, one rising high school senior from each state and the District of Columbia is chosen to be the representative for the best their state has to offer.

I went to Washington, D.C., and spent a week learning from writers and broadcasters in the profession, as well as from those in my own age group in the Class of 2019.

We also looked at strategies to implement into our publications, media sites, and news broadcasts.

2018 Al Neuharth Trip

Story on my experience at the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference. The DC trip took place from June 16-21, 2018 and I was with 50 other students from the 49 other states and the District of Columbia. It was a great experience, and the best journalism conference I have ever attended.

High School Journalism Awards

I have also received multiple awards from the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association (MSPA). These awards were awarded in the spring of my sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school, respectively.
